Born in Epsom, Surrey, in 1959, Charles Esdaile was for many years a member of staff at the University of Liverpool in the course of which time he published numerous books and articles on the Napoleonic period in general and the Peninsular War in particular. Amongst his many works on the latter are: The Peninsular War: a New History; The Spanish Army in the Peninsular War; The Duke of Wellington and the Command of the Spanish Army, 1812-1814; Fighting Napoleon: Guerrillas, Bandits and Adventurers in Spain, 1808-1814; Outpost of Empire: the Napoleonic Occupation of Andalucia, 1810-1812; Burgos in the Peninsular War: Occupation, Siege, Aftermath; Women in the Peninsular War; and Peninsular Eyewitnesses: the Experience of War in Spain and Portugal, 1808-1814. From 2008 to 2014 he was Academic Vice President of Peninsular War 200.
