John Houghton was born in Melbourne, Australia and is an Alumnus of the University of Melbourne. His career included teaching history, working for government as an educational researcher, and Senior Research Fellow in the Faculty of Education, University of Melbourne. His decades long interest in naval architecture and naval history resulted in the publication of his first book, Ships of the Line and Frigates of the Navies of the World: 1835-1840, in 1999. It was republished in 2011 as Navies of the World: 1835-1840 and updated and expanded to include new information on the Battle of Navarino (2012, 2017) Navies of the World: 1835-1840 attracted considerable interest and led to collaborations with naval historians and academics from Turkey, Spain, America, Wales, Poland and Russia.
